Alaska Auto Insurance

Required Insurance - Bodily Injury liability and Property Damage liability policies are mandatory .

Minimum Coverage - 50/100/25. Alaska has some of the highest liability coverage minimum limits in the country. These minimum limits mandate that auto insurance liability coverage should cover $50,000 for injury liability for one person in an accident, $100,000 for all injuries in any single accident, and $25,000 for property damage in an accident.

Penalty for Non-Compliance - Although possessing proof of insurance to law enforcement when stopped, the penalty for not possessing required insurance coverage for a first offense is registration suspension/revocation. However, this may be mitigated or suspended depending upon your driving record and prior offenses.

Important Auto Insurance Laws for Alaska

You are required to report to the police any accident that results in death, injury, or damages of $2,000 or more.

Coverage is also provided for any individual who uses your car with your permission. In Alaska, the auto insurance company will also cover you and any family member living with you while you are driving a vehicle owned by another party.

Uninsured (UM) and Underinsured (UIM) motorists coverage is not required. However, your insurance company is required to offer you a variety of policy limits in writing.

UM and UIM will automatically be added to your auto insurance policy at the limits of your liability coverage, unless you decline it in writing.

A poor driving record of one member in your family could adversely affect the auto insurance premiums of the entire family. Because of this, after July 1, 1997, an insured party could specifically delete a family member from an auto insurance policy.

You should be aware, however, that once a driver is excluded from your auto insurance policy, any damages caused by that driver will not be covered by the insurance company. If that uninsured family member drives without auto insurance, they would be in non-compliance with state auto insurance laws. They would then be subject to fines. If they were involved in an accident, they would be subject to uninsured liability law suit, as well as the insured person of the vehicle they had been driving at the time of an accident.

Tort Liability - liability is based on the traditional tort liability system. In Alaska, there are no restrictions on lawsuits.

Seatbelt Requirement - Although you cannot be pulled over for seatbelt non-compliance, if you are pulled over due to another traffic infraction, the penalty for any seat in non-compliance is a $15 fine. Also, if you get into an accident damage mitigation by case law applies
